- It all started with the joint family I belonged to. Watched my mother and other senior women members and relatives too who used to stream everyday in those 50s and 60s.
It was a great learning exercise. My inner psyche probed deep into their core and tried to identify the very inner strength that stems from the social life we belong to. I learnt how the strength of a woman can bond the lives of a family or can slowly lead them to separate, split. With her sorrow, happiness and sometimes sacrifice she is fathomless to measure.
When the great Satyajit Ray briefed to my artist elder brother about the theme of the film DEVI, I overheard and instantly illustrated a pencil drawing of the theme, that became the film’s poster for publicity which became the first exposure of my concept on women.
My paintings (water color and mixed media) are aimed at unveiling the mystery of her inner psyche of women. And also attempting to identify the beauty of it. Even my nudes are not done just for the sake of it – a sense of sublimity envelopes there.
Men come occasionally in my compositions, but that is chiefly to make a contrast and to create an abstraction.
